For the last few years, it seems that I have spent an inordinate amount of time working with Physical Therapists and their assistants. Let me restate that comment…I am trying to complete the work that my Physical Therapist and his Assistants conjure up for me. That sounds like they are sitting there in a dark office trying to magically figure out how to move me from Point A to Point B. Hmmm…maybe that is true!
To arrive at Point B seems like Dorothy trying to find the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz. There are so many obstacles in the way.
-
Like my lower back.
-
Like my entire back.
-
Like my left leg that hurts because my back hurts because I think that my shoulder hurts because my neck hurts. Car accidents have consequences that are ongoing.
-
Like my less than strong core (I wonder if that is the right word…see I just know nothing at all!)
-
Like my lack of ability to jump on the table without the stool to step on.
Did I hear correctly what the assistants were possibly saying…words that Dorothy heard?
“Going so soon? I wouldn’t hear of it. Why my little party’s just beginning!”
Or…
“So, you won’t take warning, eh? All the worse for you. I’ll take care of you now instead of later!”
OK… probably I just imagined that conversation…they are all actually just too nice to say those words! This is the best Physical Therapy Team that I have had in this journey to being able to move without as much pain in my back…in this journey to find my original self. Truly, I am so lucky to have met them and I look forward to Tuesday/Thursday mornings. Imagine that…me looking forward to Physical Therapy! Amazing!
The following is what I think it takes to make Physical Therapy a positive experience…
-
Happy and friendly Physical Therapists and Assistants
-
An atmosphere of positive energy
-
A slow pace if necessary
-
A fast pace when it can be achieved
-
Constant encouragement
-
Fun, yet productive conversations
-
Ability to listen to the patient
-
Ability of the patient to listen to the Physical Therapist and Assistants
-
Not too crowded…time for one-on-one work
-
An incredible base of knowledge for everyone
-
A sense of joy…for better health is a joy for everyone

I am lucky to have such a wonderful Physical Therapy Team…I want to thank them for being there for me…for being incredibly patient and for making me laugh at every visit!!
Evidently I really did find the Yellow Brick Road!
Lucky you – Good Therapist. I have encounter some that could discourage any one under their care. But I do know there are therapists that truly care.

I had two separate PT groups after the car accident that just did no work out for me. These really have a different focus. The overall morale is the key!

I’m been through many PT, the one who worked the hardest was the one worked my thumb. Ouch, it was so painful. She had so much patient…

I’ve heard that any surgery or injury to the hand is just about the most painful. There are so many nerve endings. The subsequent PT must be tough.

She used the hot pad to relax my hand first and rub my thumb. Once a while, bend it until I said ‘ouch’ then rub again.

My daughter in law is a Dr of physical therapy and is an amazing woman, mom, wife and therapist! Love her to pieces. She has this high soft little voice that has steel underneath it. I will never forget when my dad had his knee replaced and she was working where he went. He asked if he really needed to do all those exercises. Her response, “Well, Grandpa, it all depends if you want to just sit around or if you want to get back to work.” Needless to say, he did his exercises.

She sounds like a wonderful person and therapist! They stay in college for so long! My niece’s husband is a physical therapist in New Orleans. He has a wonderful laugh and disposition. I imagine he is very serious when he is working with a patient! I did my exercises with my knees too! Boy…did it hurt at first!!!!

Dad used to call his therapists “the physical terrorists”. Though I think he did enjoy them as people :).

I’m sure they really appreciate it! They sure do great work even though it’s not usually too fun for the patient at the time 😄

Thank you for your comment! I am working on the picture of “my” house down the street. I thought that I could lighten it up…no luck. Not enough light…so many trees. I may just send this one to you!

I do need to see this house! And I need to know what architect they used. I am just downright taken over by curiosity. Maybe just nosy!!! Born that way!
